Handrafted Native American style Flutes
Group Workshops & Residencies
Group workshops and school residencies provide each participant a chance to make their own Native American-style flute. The flutes are end blown and easy to play. Creating the flutes is a magical, hands-on experience! Your flute will be hand crafted from either river cane or from bamboo. Flutes will be in the pentatonic (5 note) scale, using heated metal tools to burn the holes. Using only fire, we will carefully decorate flutes further ‘curing’ the cane and applying unique design patterns. Participants will be shown how to care for and to play their flutes during the class. Hawk has safely offered these programs to literally thousands of adults and young people for over three decades. Recommendations from past schools, camps and gatherings are available, upon request.
Classes can last from 3-5 hours and may been held at schools, summer camps, festivals, gatherings, galleries, homes, and public parks. The cost of the workshop is dependent upon travel time, group numbers, etc.. Group discounts are available. Best for ages 10 and up.
Individual & Small Group Instruction
Hawk offers individual and small group (2-4 people) classes, in the art of flute making, at Homestead Retreat. Participants are provided hands-on instruction in learning to create authentic, Native American-style flutes. Options include, end blown and side blown varieties, as well as flutes in the pentatonic (5 note) and/or diatonic (8 note) scale. Flutes will be crafted using river cane or Asian bamboo. In addition to learning how to craft the flutes, participants will be shown how to tune, care for, and to play their flutes. We will also discuss responsible harvesting and curing techniques for cane and bamboo. Classes last from 3-5 hours and are held at Hawk’s studio, at Homestead Retreat. The cost of the workshop starts at $75, per person, for one flute. $25 for each additional flute made, up to 3 flutes. Best for ages 14 and up. Younger, if accompanied by an adult. Family discounts apply.

Flute Playing Instruction
Hawk offers private instruction to individuals and small groups in the art of playing Native American style, end blown flutes. Cost is $75 for two, 60 minute sessions. Group discounts are available upon request Sessions may be held at Homestead Retreat. Since 1994, Hawk has performed solo and with several different bands, including Sapien, Buffalo Dreamers, Sapien Dreamtime, and Full Circle. He has recorded nine albums of music and storytelling.
